these old ghosts

I always maintain that I don't collect, I purge. So I don't really know how to explain that for the past 15 years I have been putting this same ghost cutout in my living room window.

It was made for me by a graphic artist friend and it has even survived the move from London many years ago. Of course we had most obsessive packers in existence. They packed e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. I recall opening one box, to find an inflated balloon inside.

My ancient ghost cutout has all its corners covered in bits of old tape and the paper is getting somewhat warped. This year it seems to have developed some water stains near the bottom and dear lord the smallest ghost has lost an eye over the summer, but generally it's in remarkable shape for a two foot square of firm paper.

It's not really Hallowe'en until the ghosts come out.

Do you have a Hallowe'en tradition?

We had movers like that too - they packed up a garbage can full of garbage...go figure.

My Halloween tradition used to be put on a snowsuit and a costume and beg for candy - now it's sit in the basement with the lights off.

Those movers sound a little passive-aggressive, Kathy. I'll take a balloon any day.

Both of them are fine Hallowe'en traditions, Stephanie, the new one being slightly more conducive to horrorly behaviour.

Don't really have any Hallowe'en traditions - but it's one of my favourite holidays. When I was young we'd always roast the pumpkin seeds. I miss that. I loved decorating the museum this year - I'm going to look for a few decorations on sale after the day for next year. I was sad to see Xmas decorations already up though!

sadly, we eat the best treats way before Hallowe'en...

Isn't it fabulous, Lesley? That's why I had to hang onto it all these years. Plus my friend made it!

Grrr on the Christmas decorations, Al! Nothing makes me crazier. We always roasted the pumpkin seeds too, but now we don't even carve the pumpkins anymore. It's better as a group effort.

That's exactly what I used to do, Mr Anchovy, which is why this year I only bought candy I don't like.

I don't have a Halloween tradition per se, but the day after I sit in the dark and eat Reese's Pieces.

That's a fine tradition, Murr Brewster! It really is the most wonderful time of the year, isn't it?
