welcome to the police state

The Resident Offspring called me a fascist when I told her that I had just disabled anonymous commenting on this blog. I can't say I blame her. Similar descriptors had already run through my head.

It hurts me to do this, it really does. Not only does it hurt me to quash freedom of expression with one box tick, but I hate to make anybody sign up for yet another online identity just to leave a comment here.

Also this could seriously impede my shameless attention whore status. If this action prevents even one person from leaving me a comment telling me how awesome I am, I am going to be some pissed.

And it's all because that spammer bastard from Taiwan won't stop shilling penis enlargers on my dime. Maybe it's not penis enlargers, but whatever it is that he's trying to unload, he's obviously got way too much inventory. Ain't nobody needs that much , do they?

Some people just have to ruin it for everybody.

It's a shame Blogger doesn't have a Spam filter like WordPress.

Love the tag, by the way. :)

I had to do the same thing just yesterday. Someday the Taiwanese will get their own blogs...then...BAM! You and I will get our revenge. For now, let's lay low and bide.

who you let or don't let on your blog is entirely up to you. Don't sweat it. It does change the way I comment though. I don't comment with my Google ID because that links back to my old blog. Instead I was commenting using the name/url option, allowing me to comment as mister anchovy and link the comment back to 27th street. Now I have to comment in Open ID WordPress mode, meaning my comments will appear as 27th Street. No big deal.

No kidding, Barb!
I opted for comment moderation, that seems to work around having to deny anonymous genuine comment-ors a chance to comment. :)

Dang no more posting for me under my Taiwanese spammer alias -- back to being Urban Blonde.

Double dang cuz I still have a boatload of Penis enlargers to sell.

Can you block specific ip addresses on Wordpress, Al, because that would be handy.

I can be the stealthiest of sleeper moles when called upon to be, John. That revenge is going to be the sweetest ever.

Sounds complicated, Mr Anchovy/27th Street. I owe you for the extra effort that I am putting you through. Will an ice-cold case of beer do the trick?

I was debating using comment moderation, Jas, and it will be the next thing I try if I find I can't live without the anonymous comments, or if Taiwan spammer dude finds a way around having to show some ID.

It was fun while it lasted, Urban Blonde! But I'm willing to bet you made a small fortune on the pleasure enhancers that you sold so far. Because you have quite a way with words.

BeckEye said...

Oh, it's penis enlargers all right. And don't think you've heard the last about them.

John Mutford said...

Um. Urban Blonde, could you contact me?

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I will direct them all over to John's place, then, Beckeye. I hear he's in the market.

I haven't allowed anonymous comments on my blog for years. If someone wants to comment then they can have the balls to at least make a profile. I won't allow spammers or hateful creeps to over run my comments section.

My Woody Guthrie heart would have been proud had you entitled this post "This Fascist Kills Machines". Oops, shouldn't be mentioning "Woody" round these parts now apparently... ;)

I still think you're one awesome fascista. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

In another stroke of irony my word verification is "cracke". You just can't stop shilling the illicit pharmaceuticals around here can you?

In the whole scheme of things, and I don't mean to diminish the value and importance of your blog but....It's only a blog. Do what you want with it. It's not like you would be denying opinions to be told or heard. The blog is made for you to express yourself if others choose to read and comment it's their choice.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

But double commenting is fine, is it, Dr M? It's okay though, you are welcome to comment around here as much as you like.
I liked leaving the comments section open for anonymous postings, to allow my sibs (who don't blog) to easily leave a remark. Now they'll have to work a little harder for it.

Argh! I can't believe I missed that opportunity, Sean! Obviously I am going to have to outsource my title-penning, because I think I just had my accreditation revoked by the Wordsmithery Union. Are you taking on new clients per chance? I can pay you in cracke.

You forgot to tell me how awesome I am, Kelly. That's the whole point of this blog, or haven't I explained the rules to you yet?
I liked getting the odd comment from some random stranger who stumbled upon this place, you know, provided they weren't selling anything.

indeed, you can block specific ips, names, emails, etc. i have had to do this a few times...

hopefully the spambots won't be able to crack the comment moderation now though.

silly me! I should be flogged for my neglect.

You are awesomely wonderful!

better?

The thing is..this is your blog...you rule. you can be kind and benevolent or ruthless

Ugh, I hear you. I am thankful for the comment filtering on Wordpress, because otherwise my site would be mauled by low-rate loans and, apparently, "unimaginable penises."

Wordpress is far superior to Blogger in that regard then, Al. Can't block specific ips on Blogger. Hmmmmmmmm.

You play so nicely, Kelly! But you're right, they are our blogs, we need to reclaim them.

Now I can't stop thinking about getting mauled by unimaginable penises, Lesley. Thanks.

Having switched over to Wordpress about a year ago, I can attest to the value of its spam filter and comment moderation system. The spam comments I get now aren't penis-related, but are written in such a way that they look like a real comment, complimenting you on having such a useful, insightful blog, yada yada. It's a big ego boost until I notice that the 3 other spam comments are nearly identical to the first.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Oh I hate that type of spam comment, Moxie! I feel like they are toying with my emotions. And then I feel cheap.

Wandering Coyote said...

Jesus, just as I was about to type a comment here, some Asian spammer leaves yet ANOTHER Asian-character spam comment on ReTorte.

Look, you are no fascist. The last thing you need - or anyone needs, for that matter - is for one of the links these people are posting to cause a malware issue that will only be BIG problems for anyone even visiting here. Spammers suck and you have to do what you have to do.

Wandering Coyote said...

Also, let me just echo Allison's praise of WordPress's spam filter. It rocks! Blogger needs to get with the program.

And that being said, I am going ultra-fascist and enabling comment moderation on ReTorte. I'm sick of this shit.
