true patriot love

Today we eat strawberries because they are red and ice cream because it is white. Also because it is ice cream.

Today we haul the battered flag out of the garage and hang it from the front deck, where it will be flapping in our faces for a week or so until we get annoyed and put it back in the garage till next July.

Today we drop the Resident Offspring off at work, she wearing her Hutterite meets tablecloth uniform, and marvel at how many people are traipsing
into Heritage Park already at this ungodly hour. And secretly we are very glad that it is she and not us who is scooping ice cream there today.

Today we put Extra Old Stock beer caps in our eyes to honour the memory of Wilhelm Georg Bruederlin, who would have turned 86 today.

Happy Birthday, Canada, our true north strong and free.

Happy Birthday, Papa, you maverick.

Happy Canada Day from the East Barb! The beer bottle cap really brings out your eye(s)! Some Canada Day traditions just know no boundaries!

Eat lots of ice cream and strawberries and most of all have some fun today!

Now this Dominion Day you speak of... (Alas I remember it too!) ;-)

Have fun Barb. And Happy Canada to you and all of your family.

What a lovely post! Happy Canada to you and your family from London!

I'd say celebrate in style, but with your mentions of strawberries, ice cream, and beer cap monocles, I think you've got it covered. ;)

Have a great day Barbara! Drink lots of beer, eat those berries and relax, relax, relax!

Celebrating in style, indeed. Happy Canada Day from across the pond! Hope you and yours are relaxing and enjoying the day. Well hopefully the Resident Offspring will after work. ;)

And the same to you, Sean! Feel free to adopt the beer cap monocle if you wish, but just no running or it really will bring out an eye.

I hope you ate able to partake of some Canada activities in London, Strawberry Blondie, even if it just means sipping on a Canadian beer and eating Kraft dinner. Apparently Canada House in Trafalgar Square has some nationalistic celebrations going on, if you are so inclined.

I'm quite good at relaxing, Karen, if I really work at it. Hope you are doing the same!

I can almost guarantee she will be relaxing after work, Al, dragging her sorry ass home might be a more accurate description.
I hope you are able to enjoy some touches from home today.

I recall when touring the maritimes last summer all the flags we saw flying. A lovely flag.

You'll have to tell us the association of that particular beer cap with your Papa. I'm intrigued.

And a happy one to you as well, Mister Anchovy. Enjoy your fabulous garden!

I decided to have red wine, instead, Just A, but it was still very tasty and I had one for you. Thanks for the wished on Papa's birthday, big guy.

It IS a nice flag, isn't it, Leazwell, but sort of hard to draw.
It's a story that's sort of gotten bigger than the original. Putting a beer cap in his eye was my dad's idea of the ultimate in humour. We've adopted it to honour his memory, but only on his birthday.

Happy Canada from Malaysia! I'm so moving there. If Scotland doesn't work out. Anyway, have a great time!

I hope your Canada Day was as fabulous as mine.

We would be honoured to have you, BAP. In fact I am sending over the recruiters right now to fend off those Scottish dudes vying for your attention.

It makes my heart swell to hear about Canada Day being celebrated in Tennessee, Dr M. Our plan for world domination is evidently beginning to work.

Well I'm proud to share the same country as you fine Canadians.

Hope you had a great day. And that the eyes aren't too dented.

Happy Birthday Canada - thank you for the New Pornographers and Bad Tempered Zombie... how can we Americans return the favor?

It sounds like it was a great day!

I don't know about this so-called "Canada Day," but I'll certainly drink to Papa B.

Now that is a Canada day tradition! Hilarious.
In my neck of the woods, people end up with beer caps in their eye because they've been opening beer bottles with their eye sockets. You know, when they don't have enough teeth to do it with their mouths

Its only a brief, mostly ceremonial wearing, of the beer cap monocle, Deb, so no injuries have been incurred to date.

I'm mentioned in the same breath as the New Pornos, Will. I think that is repayment enough. I hope you have a great long weekend coming up as well.

It was a lovely day, Justrun - very relaxing, actually.

Papa B would certainly appreciate the company, Beckeye. He always welcomed someone to share a brew with him.

Oh yes, I have run into a few of those sorts during my ill-behaved university days, Gifted. I was wondering where they ultimately ended up. Now I know.
