Gogol Bordello rocked the shtetel

Coachella has some live feeds of performances that are worth watching, if Gogol Bordello's performance is any indication. And Eugene Hutz wore those exact same pants! I missed Tokyo Police Club, Of Montreal, Rufus Wainwright, Arcade Fire (who are being reported as spectacular), Bjork (ditto on the spectacular), Regina Spektor and Andrew Bird, but did manage to catch Gogol Bordello absolutely tear the pants off the place.

But I will be home today, so plan to catch Junior Boys, Kaiser Chiefs and Klaxons.

NME, meanwhile, has pretty decent coverage of the scene and some decent photos, which is where we were able to verify the information from the anonymous tipster that William Reid has indeed gone pudgy, but is still attempting to rock the JAMC hair and leather. Sad, really. Jim still looks great though.

I am a rather disappointed by the perplexing move of having Scarlett Johansson sing backup for them on Just Like Honey on Friday night. Yeah yeah I get the connection to Lost in Translation, but it sure doesn't do much to dispell the rumours that the JAMC are only reuniting to make a buttload of money. And whatever happened to the rule of no actors on stage?

Jarvis Cocker, on the other hand, is being reported to be a model of graciousness and civility. NME reports that while watching Tilly and the Wall on Friday, Jarvis was repeatedly approached by people asking to take their photos with him, to which he replied every single time "Alright. If you want." What a real nice guy you are, Jarvis!

Later today, a review of some live music that I actually attended in person last night, plus of course the Labias. Y'all come back now, hear?

What do you think are you going to do in 2010, when the Harry Potter saga is over and you’re twenty? Are you also planning to take part in other projects in the meantime, like Radcliffe and Grint did?
"I won’t be appearing naked on stage with a horse, if that’s what you mean."

OH SNAPZ, EMMA WATSON

I am unbelievably slow, as I did not get the connection between ScarJo and JAMC and Lost in Translation. Although 'Just Like Honey' is definitely one of those songs the cap a film. Still feels odd to me.

Looking forward to your review of the concert you attended in person :)

Oh, I have a Wal-Mart (supercentre) story to share with you as well. *Shudders*

Emma's turning into the queen of the quick comeback. Nicely done, her. She is turning into a contestant for "who'd win in a fight".

hahaha ScarJo - makes her sound pretty tough, doesn't it? The whole situation feels odd and slightly cringe-making to me, Al. It smacks of an attempt to tap into the youth market.
Arrggghhhh! A Walmart story! Talk about cringe-making. I can't wait!

The coachella line-up seriously made me salivate, but I also shed tears of grief and inconvenience of location.

Scarlett Johansson can sing? Well I guess everybody can sing these days...

Just found out a friend of mine is down at Coachella. My envy meter skyrocketed at the thought. He's from Calgary by the way and an enormous fan of Woodpigeon. Small world sometimes.

Since I adore Jarvis Cocker I liked hearing that he was wonderful in person as well.

Yeah - the Mary Chain are in it for the dosh, but I'll forgive them - if only for the You Trip Me Up. One of them had a dalliance th Hope Whatsername didn't he? Lucky, lucky, lucky

I'll take back the forgiveness due to a rush of envy. Them basatrd sellouts...

Now that William has "gone pudgy" he can fit a lot more cash in his ass!

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Absolutely everybody, Hilary - you should hear me sing sometime. Apparently ScarJo (thanks Al) is releasing an album of Tom Waits covers. Hmmm.

I hope your friend brings back lots of stories from Coachella, Toccata. Woodpigeon is such a good band, I'm hoping to see them in June when they play at the new indie festival in town.
I know, I love that Jarvis is so sweet, and he's a great daddy too. How sexy is that? (answer: very)

I hear you, Danny, I'm waffling back and forth between calling them godlike geniuses and filthy opportunists.
I had also heard that one of them (William?) had a thing with Hope Sandovl once upon a time. Don't know if it's true or not. But Hope is who they SHOULD have had singing with them on Friday. That would have been both awesome and fitting.

Ewww, he really should use a wallet, Fearless!

I heard Scarlett Johanson sing on SNL recently. She sounded like she was doing an impression of Molly Shannon when she does that low-down, quasi-tough Cher vibrato.

Fearless said...

Hey, you're the one that said "buttload"..

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Whoa! That's the scariest bit of news I've heard all day, Beckeye! It sounds like she's living up to the ScarJo moniker.

hahaha, okay, guilty as charged, Fearless!

Tell me you went to see The Roots and/or Manu Chao?

The whole trend Scarlett thing is beyond me ... I am quite over her, and I would think that Coachella audience would be too. May be a sign that the JAMC are a bit out of touch. I mean, what's next - a Puff Daddy remix?

Ok, anyway, didn't catch any of the live action but I'm sure much of it was spectac. And that Jarvis sounds like a fine fellow.

There are those who'd argue that having Scarlett Johansen onstage didn't constitute a violation of that rule...

I actually loved Lost in Translation.

My friend Andreas loves Gogol Bordello-- even played their music at his wedding.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Sadly, none of the above were here, Just A. You likely aren't familiar with the musicians that I did go to see, as they aren't very well known. But I'm going to subject you to the review anyway.

You would have thought whoever was behind the JAMC reunion would be a bit more savvy, wouldn't you, Will? They could've asked Hope Sandovl, or their sister, or even Bobby Gillespie and they all would have been more meaningful and authentic.
I caught a few live feeds - Gogol Bordello of course - awesome! Junior Boys had really bad audio happening and you could barely hear the show, and I also watched Kaiser Chiefs, who put on a pretty lively performance.
Jarvis owns my heart these days.

Oh snap, Johnny! I quite liked Lost in Translation and have nothing against ScarJo, but I sure didn't see the point in her performance at Coachella.
Andreas must have had a hell of a lively wedding! Gogol Bordello are insane!

Why isn't this a summer concert? This is mindboggling spectacular- I thought that only happened in the summer. How come they change all the rules?

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I guess down there it is summer, John. It was ~40 there during the weekend. But yeah, I'm sure not in summer mindset yet.

justacoolcat said...

I'm confused. I just read they were both at Coachella.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Ahhh, see that's where I got confused, Just A - I assumed you meant the shows I saw in Calgary. I believe I heard they were at Coachella, but sadly I didn't go and they only had some select concerts on live feed. Sorry bout the confusion - I didn't mean to get you all excited.

justacoolcat said...

Man I was revved too thinking you were at Coachella.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Imagine how revved I would have been, Just A! But do you really think I would have gone to Coachella without stopping to pick you up on the way?
