Close Encounters with Office Depot: the Final Chapter

It's a done deal, folks. All that's left to do is the celebrating.
Yesterday I went down to Office Depot to do the deal, to make the switch. You may remember that I was told I would be getting a full refund in the form of a store merchandise card. I was asked which store I wanted to deal with, and while I waffled for a while as to whether I would rather gloat while waggling my refund in the face of the manager who started the whole fiasco, or alternatively never set foot in that particular store again, eventually I decided to deal with a different store.
This store is not that much further from my place and it's way bigger than the nasty store. Not that bigger is necessarily better (usually it's not), but it this case it sure is.
To make a long story short, I was treated very well, by very pleasant and efficient people, and not only was I given the full refund, I was refunded on my credit card, so I got a cash refund instead of a store credit!
I was so pleased by this that, even though I was no longer committed to spending that money at Office Depot, I ended up doing some shopping there anyway. Admittedly I was in the mindset to go shopping anyway, but I also wanted to reward these particular people for the fair way they treated me. See? If you treat me nicely, I will respond in kind. I'm rather Pavlovian that way.
I got a big stack of blank cds, some cd covers, some mailers (do you see where this is leading?), as well as a while bunch of really cool paper in some great colours.
Now I get to have fun. I shall start putting together the Victory cd this weekend to send out to everyone who wants one.
Here's my list so far:
- Alana
-Michelle and GOB
If you want a copy, just let me know, and if I don't have your mailing address, shoot me an email.
In entertainment news, my kid has once again won some CeeBeeCee swag from Definitely Not the Opera, this time for identifying Bloc Party's Banquet on the "what's on Sook-Yin's ipod?" contest. She phoned in her answer and sang it to them, hopefully scoring some Brownie points for the effort, and she made sure to give them her t-shirt size as well, even though they didn't ask for it.
But I guess you have to shoot for the stars sometimes, as last time the swag was admittedly pretty crappy.

That is sooo awesome about them refunding your credit card YAY! I would've rewarded them by shopping there a bit too. How very cool of them.
Congrats to Eva. :D

That's so cool, a refund on your credit card, it is way better than a gift card! All those e-mails adn those fights it has finally worth it!

Celebrations all round. Good on Eva for winning again. You know I have never called a radio station for a contest...

I was very pleasantly surprised, Mel. I'm glad you don't think that I caved by shopping there, but sometimes you have to express good will toward your opponent.

Way better than a gift card, Evelyne! Now I can pay some bills! There were a lot of emails and ultimately I'm glad I didn't give up, and I owe all you guys a lot of thanks for encouraging me to keep going.

I don't think I ever have either, Barbara W. I have won things via email before, but I know they like it when you phone in sometimes, especially if you sing...

Well done Barbara, now the whole sorry episode is over and through your blog we've all learnt to tread carefully when considering dealing with Office Despot.

I'd have loved to have heard Eva's impression of Kele. Congratulations.

whoo hooooo! cash baby! that's so awesome!

ok, i really need not to post while i am freakin' out on caffeine!... :)

YAY! Congrats on getting an ACTUAL refund rather than store credit! That's so awesome. And the service you received sounds wonderful. You're right it makes a huge difference when people are polite.

PSSST! I'm sending you an email...

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Sadly, I wasn't home when Eva phoned in her Bloc Party impression, Ben, because I would like to have heard it as well. It's hard to sing Bloc Party without doing the accent.

Not at all, 668! Around here we love comments driven by caffeine freaking!

And it's not that difficult to be polite either, Karen. It really does grease the wheel of human relations, I think.
Got your email - thanks, that's great!

Oh man, I don't know if I could have been nice enough to NOT return to the ill-fated store, however you probably don't want your shopping served with a side of bad customer service. I should still record my Office Depot dis and you can walk in bumping in on a ginormous boombox.

Can't wait for the victory cd.

Soo excited for the cd! I have to do some cover art, ect. And getting to the post office that will be the biggest deal. I have 2 more letters to write. I should really go and get xmas cards and do everything at once. ;) Where is that Santa dude when you need him?

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Regardless of the outcome of the OD experience, Will, I still want to hear your OD dis, and I've always wanted to do the big boombox thing.
I've started working on the Victory cd and I'm pretty pumped about it.

It's just starting to snowball, isn't it, Serah? My chores all end up that way as well. And you are the second person to mention the C word today - what gives? It's too early, or am I woefully behind? (probably)

Ruhee said...

Ruhee would love one! And to make up for not commenting for AGES and then being selfish and asking for a mix ... I'll send you one too :D

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I'd love to send you one, Ruhee. Oooo and I'd love to receive one as well.

And no worries on not commenting for a while - you have studying to do, missy!

Allison said...

YAY!! I'm so happy for you Barb. Even more so that they refunded your credit card! That must have been a sweet feeling.
I agree, spending a little in the store is a sign of good will. I will however, be doubtful if I see any Office Depots in the future. I've never seen one here. We have Business Depot, but no Office Depot.
I'm excited to hear this victory cd!

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I was so surprised when they refunded my credit card, Allison. It was just a great moment for me.
I don't think I've become an Office Depot convert or anything like that, but we have a truce now.

It has been a long, hard, and frustrating road for you. I applaud your tenacity and refusal to give into the Ineffectual Middle-Management-Suck-Ups. They are like leprechauns, they are, jealously guarding their bottom lines as the little-people guard their pots ‘o gold.

You have defeated the beasties…now it’s Kokanee time.

‘chelle has authorized me full permission to issue you an official “Woo Hoo” and “Yippee” (I am paraphrasing, of course) and we will watch for your amazing and inspirational compilation in the mail. Thank you for thinking of both of us!

Congrats…the score (for those of us scoring at home) is now ---> BARB: 1 EVIL EMPIRE: 0

Best wishes and office products.

GOB, my man, you were such a huge help to me. I truly owe victory this largely to your efforts.

It is a sweet sweet feeling and I am really enjoying making up this Victory cd as a small token of my appreciation for all that everyone has done to help.

Screw those leprechuans anyway!

WolfHeart RavenHorse said...

Could I join in the celebration and get a cd? I always love your selection of music!!! You don't have to mail it though - I am sure I will see you soon!!

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I'd be honoured to make one for you, Bev. I shall put you on the list.

Oooo speaking of lists, I still have to send you my list of available times in November for a Martha and the boy-muffins night. Thanks for the reminder.

John Mutford said...

Ooh, ooh, ooh I want one!

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Ask and you shall receive, John. I'm very happy to send you one.

Hey, congratulations - what a hard-won victory, but good for you for sticking to your guns. And it says so much about how gracious you are that you can get past it and deal with the bigger, nicer store anyhoo, so long as they have what you need. Count me in on the victory CD. Oh, and I'll mail you a rum cake this Christmas, but I've misplaced your address from 6 months ago so I'll need to get it again, 'k?

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Thank you, PF! Consider yourself to be on the mailing list - very happy to send you a cd.

Oooooooo, rum cake! That's very sweet of you - thanks! I'll send you an email.
