"That woman is not going to break my heart three times in one year!"
- Jerry

Jerry is still all pissed off at Neko Case for not touring with the New Pornos this spring, plus cancelling out of the Calgary Folk Festival. So that's why I only scored two tickets to the New Pornographers / Novillero concert in October. Somebody's heart is still shattered.

Hopefully he can grab a ticket at the last minute if it turns out she is touring with them

Eva and I are excited enough to see the New Pornos again, plus our go-to-your-happy-place band, Novillero. They are worth the price of admission just to see their vaguely pudgy wildly enthusiastic tambourine guy (who, we understand, is actually not a band member, but their manager, whom they let play with them on occasion).

They are a really fun band to see live. They've got the energy, they've got upbeat songs with lots of crazy piano and, of course, a wild tambourine player. And they're really really happy when you buy their cd.

I finished Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk, which lived up to the hype of gross-out to the max and unbelievable ways for people to mutilate themselves. Of course by now everybody has heard of the story within the book of masturbation gone horribly wrong, resulting in the narrator having to chew through his own intestine to keep from drowning.

But aside from the vomit-fest, there is actually a point to the book about the nature of humanity and the price that people will pay for fame, fortune, and immortality. Of course, a vomit-fest never hurts sales.

I was happy to be able to pick up Lynn Coady's new book, Mean Boy, which I've been looking forward to for quite some time, ever since finishing the Saints of Big Harbour and Play the Monster Blind. It drives me crazy sometimes to discover an author that I really enjoy and they've only got about two or three books, so you have to wait for forever for them to finish another. Makes me want to go over to their house and tell them, "okay, no going out tonight, no tv, you are working on your book, missy."

Also at my new favourite record store, the library, I picked up a Primal Scream Dirty Hits cd. We have most of the songs already, but I was really chuffed to discover a second cd was included - all remixes. Cool! I can hardly wait to boogey down with Bobbie Gillespie and co.

When do you have time to read? Do you read and listen to new music at the same time?

I bet Barbara B. has one of those time-saver magical things Hermione has in Harry Potter so she can do a whole bunch of extra classes.

How did Eva's hair dyeing go? I know hair dye is quite a tricky thing.

Barbara said...

Hilary, hairdressers want you to believe it's tricky. It's simple, you follow the directions on the box or am I mixing that up with Kraft Dinner? No the directions are in the box with those plastic gloves stuck on them. Just ask the cosmetician's advise on what box you should buy first and Bob's your uncle!

Oh I take forever to read a book, Barbara W. I always have to renew library books, because I usually just read in bed. But yes, I do listen to music all the time.

I always thought that was such a brilliant idea, Hilary. They have some of the best inventions in Harry Potter, well except for the ear-wax flavoured beans...
The hair dying went really well. It's not a black black, but has some brown highlights so looks very natural and really shows up her brilliant blue eyes.

Good advice Barbara W, but I'm sticking to the easy way out, because I am basically very lazy.

I need to stop reading peoples blogs while I'm eating (b/w that and the 'Record Rooms' Classic Album Art' nothing is safe to click anymore) LOL.
I hadn't heard that story.

John Mutford said...

Did you know they have actually marketed those jelly beans?

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Oh god yeah, Allison, the bad album cover art on the Record Room is pretty scary as dinner art! It's dead funny though...
Sorry to launch that Haunted story at you then. See? Now you'll have to read the book to find out how that situation happened.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Yes, I had heard that too, John. I'm assuming they do a fairly brisk trade in the vomit and earwax beans among the 8 year old boy market.

John Mutford said...

What is it with you and Scottish bands?

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Oh I'm a sucker for the accent, John!
But aside from that, I'm not sure, it just seems whenever I hear a band that I really like, chances are they will either be Canadian or Scottish (with some obvious exceptions).

When I was ten, I wanted to go to Hogwarts.

I've dyed my hair quite a few times from the box, with those awesome gloves you get that fit your hands really well. =). Sometimes it doesn't turn out so well. Like on me, black ends up looking purple. I'm glad Eva's black turned out well, it's sounds really nice.

The cover of that book scares you before you've even read a page Barbara. Is it one of those where you are scared to turn to the next page ?

JaG said...

I am reading Haunted right now!!

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I still want to go to Hogwarts, Hilary, but then there are those who would argue that's because I am still 10 mentally.
Purple hair is always cool, though, except I guess if you are expecting black, not so much.

I have been told that the cover actually glows in the dark, Ben (although the copy I had never did). The book is not actually scary, because it is all about atrocities that people do to themselves, not to others. Weird, but vintage Palahniuk.

Hello Jag, welcome! I sure hope I didn't give you any spoilers! It's a rather incredible book, isn't it? I found myself saying "what? what?" a lot.

Barbara B. I have two more shelf things to assemble but I would rather hang around your blog and pretend they are not in my room waiting for me to get the tools out. tsk. But the room is shaping up though. If I pretend the walls are not pink and I should repaint them I can almost imagine where to put the paintings and posters. I have a 'nice fouton sofa' for guest such as yourself when you visit Toronto. I have a whole other room next to me I could do something with but for now I have enough room to put all my crap and treasures. Who needs more than that?

Barbara Bruederlin said...

It sounds like you are getting a lovely little home base for yourself, Barbara W!
I too am indulging in displacement activities right now. We have to move our computer and we cannot run cable into the room it's being moved to without drilling mega holes in the wall or running cable up the outside of the house, so I am installing wireless. That's my goal for today.
And then of course, the move creates a domino effect, where dressers and desks have to be shuffled from one room in the house to another, endlessly. It's giving me a headache just thinking about it.
So yeah, I'd rather just visit as well.

lol I just finished one piece of funiture. I made a few small errors in the making of it. I am proud to say I corrected the errors and it all works fine! It looks like a real cupboard with doors and shelfs just like in the picture. :-)
I have dlink wireless here so we did not have wires running everywhere. Good thing because my sister's computer is one floor up in the opposite end of the house. So far so good.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Well that gives me hope that I can get the wireless expedition completed without too much bloodshed. Good job on the furniture.

Barbara said...

One little thing about wireless. Just install the software very carefully. Bon chance.
Oh I had my lunch break and now back to assembling the other shelf unit. *sigh*

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I only got the router installed today, Barbara W. I'll continue with the adapter and software tomorrow. Family keeps wanting to eat supper for some reason...

there you go a Calgary cam.
I don't think I will see you in that picture though...

michelle said...

dang Barbara, if I was within a reasonable driving distance from you (ugh, total bummer) I'dve gotten you up & ready in no time. :( Networks are my specialty.

If you stumble & get frustrated I can help you out... not like you'll need it but ya know, if you need another resource give me a shout.

I have a VERY difficult time watching the Harry Potter movies. Daniel Radcliffe looks like he coulda been my ex-husband's brother, it's weird! Especially since his dad was British. If you wanna, I can send you a picture via email. I'm not posting that atrocity. :D Especially since I'm in the picture I'd be sending, heh.

I actually bought some Bertie Botts All Flavour Beans at Toys R Us 6 years ago. Ew, disgusting!

Did you ever find out if your cover of that book glows in the dark Barbara? I've been dying to find out. (Oh, nevermind, i just read your reply to Ben...Dale's copy glowed..Dale of Passion of the Dale on my blogroll) He found out quite by accident and nearly threw the book across the room it startled him so much :)

I'm glad Eva's hair turned out well. Dark hair with blue eyes is devastatingly beautiful. Dev's g/f Amy has that combo naturally.

Please let me know how the wireless install went...Im thinking of doing that myself, but it sounds a bit scary!!!

michelle said...

oooh, mellowlee, I did those Bertie Botts beans too! They were all so disturbingly accurately flavored it freaked me out. Earwax kind of worried me, I mean, who eats earwax...

I shoulda said, that was one of MANY flavors that worried me. Vomit was the one that made me stop, though. Never had another one since that horrible little nugget of disgust.

mellowlee said...

LMAO! Michelle, that is so hilarious! I made a friend of mine test them all out *grin*

Barbara said...

Re the dlink: warning about the software... it's giving me startup problems. Some conflict or other. I uploaded what was supposed to be the solution yesterday but the same blue screen shows up today talking about cache and shadowing in the bios or something. I need to find a computer guy who will come over and fix it for free. For this service I will give him the tour of my cosy little dungeon.(said the spider to the fly) :-)

Barbara Bruederlin said...

It's been ages since I was at the zoo, Barbara W, although the Calgary Zoo is worth seeing. If I do go, I will remember to keep smiling and not scratch inappropriately - so thanks for the warning.

Oh how I do wish you could install this for me, Michelle. By default I have become the computer installation expert in the family and that is never a good thing - the blind leading the blind.
I would LOVE to see that photo, my dear! It's a shame when past relationships ruin perfectly good movies for us.

You can buy those nasty little beasn at Toys backward R Us, Mel? Have they no shame? Good move on getting a "friend" to test drive them first.

Yeah, Michelle. I guess the earwax ones are strictly for the prank market, as are the vomit ones. Sure we've all eaten vomit, but never intentionally.

How long have you been using wireless, Barbara W?

Barbara said...

A week or two Barbara B. My sister will fix it if anything needs to be fixed she says.
I just came back from a 4 hour singles cruise around Toronto's harbour area. Ate, danced, chatted, flirted and drank. It was fun.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

That does sound like fun, Barbara. You are making the most of the new life!

Will said...

Yeah, I'm not too happy that Neko Case isn't touring with them ... and Dan Bejar, too. I mean, A.C. is still awesome - don't get me wrong. But I want to see the real supergroup. I saw the New Pornos at an in-store and later saw Neko and Destroyer (not at the same show, though) and I'd have to say Neko was my favorite of the bunch. Hopefully she will stop canceling her appearances out there.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I'm telling you Will, she hates me. I don't know what I did to offend her... She obviously likes you a lot more.
I'll still go give Carl my adoration, but it won't be the same, you're right.

kees said...

Oooh, I'm in the market for a new book to start reading, reckon I'll give Haunted a go. Sounds, um, interesting.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Haunted is definitely an "interesting" book, Kees, if you don't mind stomach-churning bits.
May I also recommend my favourite recent book "A Complicated Kindness" by Mariam Toews?

kees said...

Why thanks for the recommendation, always appreciate book recommendations - sometimes it's difficult to tell what they'll be like from the cover (hehehehe! sorry). I will check both out - and certainly won't let stomach churning put me off.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

You are made of stern stuff, Kees. Good for you!
