Polls are just closing here.
I fear I may have cast the only NDP ballot in the city of Calgary.
Let's hope all the soft conservatives got scared at the last minute and said "Holy fuck, we may just get stuck with Steven Harper" and voted ANYBODY BUT CONSERVATIVE!!!!!!
CBC Newsworld has got some kick-ass election coverage tonight:
the venerable Peter Mansbridge, the ever-sassy Rick Mercer, the comedy duo of Don Cherry and Ron McLean, the eloquent Rex Murphy, and our boyfriend, George Stroumboulopoulos who's hosting a party in the CBC atrium. And Matty Good is there with his laptop and he wore a suitjacket and looks all cleaned up and nice.

I voted NDP, and I know at least 3 other people that did to! Sooo that makes what like 5 of us?

Barbara,

I am watching the returns come in on CBC. Not looking good.

I was heartened by the speach (being made even as I type) by the NDP candidate (Layton?). You just don't hear speaches like that here in the states. A class act for sure.

Wishing you well,

GOB

I voted NDP as well. I think they did OK in the Halifax Area and in Northern New Brunswick but the Maritimes have a lot of liberal seats.

My girlfriend was saying this morning that Mr. Harper's comments about lazy maritimers (made several years ago) is part of the reason no one here wants to vote for his party.

I don't know if that's true or not. Anyway, at least it's a minority government. Maybe the NDP and the Liberals will work together and get some good stuff on the go.

haha Monica - you know it! Actually overall NDP did reasonably well, but what a blue sweep of Alberta - yikes!

GOB - Jack Layton is a good guy and I think he will do well as the unofficial conscience of the nation. His wife, Olivia Chow, won in her riding as well. They are a cute couple.

Jas, are you in Steven Harper's riding? Ouch. Oh well, I get Jason Kenney. No prize there.

Neil - I like your new picture - not sure about the stache though, harhar. I'm with you on the hopes for a minority government with a good showing by the NDP. And your girlfriend, I'm sure, is right. I will never forget those remarks Steven Harper made about Maritimers and I'm sure you folks will forget even less.

The NDP did steal a bunch of seats from the Conservatives in the BC area so ... all is not quite lost. I'm disappointed with their overall count, though - stupid Bloc.

We voted Green! :D

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I was considering voting Green again, Ruhee (I voted for them last time), but I was troubled by some of their accounting issues that have come to light, and then I was finding myself getting more and more behind Jack Layton and his platform.

It is heartening to see you youngstas taking an interest in politics!

Well , I thought it was time for a change and voted Green! I'm tried of the lying bullshit that is constantly spread by the other two big political parties.
I briefly thought of voting for the NDP but the individual running in my area had the IQ of fence post.
So that is what Matt Good looks like! The lap top really threw me off.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Bruno, Matt Good is ALL about the laptop. He was blogging the whole time he was on air.
I think you told me about the NDP candidate before - he sounds like a winner. Too bad.

Ooops, didn't mean to double blog you! sorry

Barbara Bruederlin said...

Hey, no worries, Anony, but who are you? Identify yourself or I'll shoot (that's how we handle things in all-Conservative Alberta now).

Stephanie said...

woot woot for shooting!

I would say something but apparently it's all been said before with much more wit and eloquence.

Ok, here's one thing. At least the suspense is over?

eh.

Barbara Bruederlin said...

The suspense is indeed over. Now comes the post-electoral hangover. But at least nobody got shot.

Hey Barb and vwbuglover, what's wrong with fence posts? Huh? Jane is ticked off with me- I told her I didn't believe in strategic voting and she listened to me for once- so she feels responsible for the defeat of Alcock.NDP did surprisingly well in our riding-wayyyyyyy behind Con Inky Mark but nearly 80 ahead of Lib.

Hey Berni! Nice to have more family coming to visit!
Poor Jane - she will vote with her conscience from now on, I'm sure. No matter what you think of Inky Mark, though, he's got one of the best names in Canadian politics.
