Fuck the fucking fuckers!

How exactly does someone do their job when the mighty institute of higher learning where they labour gives them absolutely no fucking support? How do I work now with no office, no internet, and a hostile environment. How does my colleague - a professor - work in a tiny run-down shithole of an office shared with 2 grad students, with one internet connection ("but we can put one in for you in about 3 weeks for $900.00 and thanks for giving up your nice office where you already paid for 2 connections, sucka!"), and one fucking electrical plug?

The sad thing is, if I were to quit, it would only hurt the people I care about, not the fuckers who are making it impossible for me to do my job. They either don't give a shit or they are wringing their hands in glee because hey! it opens up more space for them. My hands are tied.

Fuck them all.

Thank you for listening; I feel better now.

Barbara,

I have heard of some really bad work environments. Hell, I’ve worked many – not the least of which was my recently-former position (we can talk on that at a later date, if you need a laugh or two). The situation you are in is far worse than any I have ever personally encountered. I know that you are not looking for validation, but there it is – for what good it may do. I feel for you and for your colleagues.

I don’t know the nature of the work that you do – and that’s largely irrelevant right now. When an employer takes liberties with an employee’s ability to perform - that employer has abused its authority. This is abuse of power and (going a touch out on a limb here) is likely an effect of personal agendas or rancor on the part of the individuals who hold positions of influence. I am not telling you anything that you don’t already know…this is just a restatement of what you said in your post.

I see also that you are struggling with the frustration that can only come from the feeling of powerlessness in the face of bureaucracy. I cannot imagine a more horrible feeling in the workplace and I send good thoughts…although we also know that you are strong and capable of facing down those who seek to oppress you.

Seeking new employment may not seem like much of an option to you…I can understand wanting to not hurt those you work with. That said…I encourage you to update your résumé and send some feelers on job opportunities into the public sector as well as academia. I hate to be a pessimist on the topic, but if those in power are willing to exploit the influence with which they have been entrusted - it is not inconceivable that more lies on the horizon.

Prepare yourself…there is nothing wrong with anticipating the next move of a tyrant and there is everything right with examining your opportunities – especially now.

With deepest support,

GOB

Who are the "fuckers"? I'm not clear on it. But one thing I do know is that they should defenitely fuck off.

Thank you, thank you, GOB, for being so understanding and sympathetic to my insane rantings. You are right, the true nature of the tyranny (and believe me there are some tyrants with huge egos and ambitions involved) is starting to assert itself. Definitely time to reassess.

I am so glad that you made the break and that you will be starting your great new job tomorrow. Best wishes on the horrid commute, and hopefully you guys can get re-established in da big city very soon.

Hi Neil, the aforementioned fuckers are the university administration, to a certain degree, and most particularly some highly ambitious Napoleans in the department.

I am thisclose to telling them all to fuck off. I guess if they ever read this blog, I already have haha!

You are so right, Barb. "F the F Fers! I have been boiling inside...I feel like quitting, but then as ZZ said, "you cannot give up easily, you have to resist and fight".

Barb, I am sorry, that sucks! It's hard to be expected to do a good job when they do that to you. I wish you the best and will give you a big hug on Friday.

Jas, yeah, ZZ is right. We can't let them win. Remind me to fill you in a some more stuff Thursday.

Bev, thanks - looking forward to the hug and for hanging with the Marthas and the boy-Marthas that night.

Thanks Jen, it's not so much the lack of tech, because that is available (and I'm told I should have email by Friday), it's more of a pissing contest for space and power, and my team is getting caught between the streams of piss.

Where did you find that picture - I LOVE IT and want to use it as a screensaver. Looks like a mini-me! Sorry about the crap at work, do a big ol expose' on them when you get your time in the limelight on the HOUR!!!

Great idea, Kellee, it would make a great screensaver, esp at work. I found it on Google Images under "fuck off". Yeah, I'll be sure to tell George all about my issues at work. That will make me really popular.
