Finally onboard the Christmas train
Haha got my German cards mailed today, with pictures and everything. Now I just have the other 17 gajillion to do.
But at least I've started on something more now than just dumping brandy over the fruitcake. I shopped my ass off for an hour this afternoon and got a few presents. Unfortunately I have a bunch more to nab that I still have to mail away.
You see, it's all my siblings' fault. We all agreed that we would now no longer buy for each others' families, but somehow in my simple mind that got translated into "I don't need to do anything for Christmas". I realised the other day that's not strictly true.

I just heard that the next Canada Reads panel has been announced and among the panelists are none other than Scott Thompson of Kids in the Hall (yay!) and John K Samson of the Weakerthans (more yay!). John's book pick is A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews, which makes sense as she is a Winnipeg writer, while Scott's book pick is Mordecai Richler's Cocksure. Which also makes sense, harhar.

Has anybody got any information on a band called Shoulder?
They were a punk band in London, Ontario (I'm guessing in the early 90s) and they were Bry Webb's band before the Constantines.
I should know them as I lived in London from 87-97 but I was busy marrying and babying and renovating at the time and sort of got away from music for a while. Shit happens.
I'd love to find some info on them though. Do you know how many Googles entries there are for the word "Shoulder"?

I love Richler....I actually started on his last novel "barney's version" (which was amazing), got hooked and read through all his novels in less than a year.

His writing style is so crass (sp?), I feel like I am right down there in the muck and grime with his characters.

I really liked Barnie's Version as well - I think it's my favourite Richler book. I think you pegged it, about the muck and the grime. He is rather profane isn't he? Can you imagine what Scott Thompson will do to promote his book?

Wow, the brandy actually makes it to your fruitcake? *wink*

I just finally bought my holiday cards today. I'm so slow on catching this season's vibe, Keanu Reeves looks like Einstein next to me. I applaud your energy - can you lend me some?

Confession: my fruitcake is really only brandy held together by molecules of cake and candied fruit. It's actually pretty good.

Neither Keanu Reeves nor I have a good excuse for being behind on Christmas this year; you do.

Brandy, cake-cookie, and candied fruit - this is ambrosia + nectar defined. What's with all the fruitcake hating, anyway?

Your lentil soup recipe reigns supreme as proof of your culinary exaspergasm. See me? I'm hooked. *insert serious Barbara adulation*

Eh, nah, I don't have any excuses for being lazy this season. I should be on top of my game but slacking is feeling ohhh so good! At least until 5 days from now hits.

Michelle, people just haven't experienced GOOD fruitcake is all. So glad you liked the lentil soup. I get mouth orgasms from it too.

Barb, I remember your brandy soaked fruitcake....(remember Alastair's comments?!)
Even better when you start a work day after consuming it. Are you bringing some in???

Barbara Bruederlin said...

I plan to bring some in, Jas, maybe for after Lisa's thesis defence (certainly not before!) haha we'll get Alastair loaded on fruitcake and put him on a plane.

Yes Barbara, alas, you are absolutely correct. I always feel silly when I admit to liking fruitcake 'cause some lowbrow always pipes in going "ewww, you like fruitcake?" and I have to defend my position by saying "ewww, you eat canned desserts?"

Your kitchen skills sound like they're highly coveted, if the conversation between you and Jas is to be taken more than banter!

Barb, good plan getting Alastair high!

Michelle: Barb does cook great!

"eww, you eat canned dessert?" - haha, Michelle, you rock! I'll definitely have to borrow that to defend myself in the future.
Jas, you make the best tea I have ever had.

I also liked Barney's Version, you don't know me, but I need a thesis to write an essay on Barney's Version so if you could think of any that would really help me, I'm drawing a blank. I was thinking on focusing on the idea of Barney's identity, or lack thereof.
Thanks, I know this is weird but I'm desperate.
:)

Sorry, Anony, I wish I could help, but I did my thesis in physiology, so am really removed from any academic sources for Can Lit.
